Need something to do on Friday, July 22? Have you been promising yourself that you will make it to the Depot for an event?
On stage will be Patrick Foy beginning at 7 p.m. Foy will bring to the stage a repatriation of easy listening rock ’n’ roll songs from the ’60s and ’70s. He is on stage until 9 p.m.
But before his appearance, the doors open at 5 p.m. and volunteers will serve up a tasty array of foods. Always on the menu are: Cubans, gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, hobo stew, gluten- free veggie wraps and desserts. Food is served from 5 to 8 p.m.
A $5 fee is collected at the door to help pay for the musical offering of the evening.

Marion County Public Schools wants to hire hundreds of people for the upcoming school year and is holding its first-ever Hometown Hiring Career Fair on Tuesday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three county schools.
Marion Oaks Elementary (280 Marion Oaks Trail, Ocala), Fort King Middle (545 NE 17 Ave., Ocala), and Belleview High (10400 SE 36 Ave., Belleview) will serve as host sites for the event designed to attract classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, custodians, bus drivers, food service, and Marion Afterschool Program workers. At least 22 schools and several departments will be hiring simultaneously at all three campuses.

The Friends of the Dunnellon Public Library is seeking active volunteers to increase the bookstore hours. The bookstore is open and collecting book donations during business hours.
It is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the third Saturday of each month, also from 10 to 1. It offers additional hours of operation on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, staying open until 3 p.m. Also, on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, it remains open until 4 p.m.
Book donations should be in good condition, less than 10 years old, and not smell of mold or other odors.
The College of Central Florida invites anyone thinking about college to an open house on Wednesday, July 27, 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m., at the CF Ocala Campus, Ewers Century Center, 3001 S.W. College Road.
Future students are encouraged to stop by to tour the campus and learn about more than 150 academic pathways, including 70 job-training programs. Attendees can get help with admission and financial aid and register for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 15.
Everyone who completes an admissions application at the event will have the $30 admissions fee waived and will be entered to win free tuition for a 3-credit-hour class at CF’s standard tuition rate.
A virtual open house will also be offered on Wednesday, Aug. 3, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Zoom.

The Discovery Center’s newest exhibit, Spy Science, recently opened to the public and will be on display through Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Discovery Center, 701 NE Sanchez Ave., Ocala. The exhibit will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Discover the history, science and even the Hollywood connections within the spy industry, when this new exhibit takes visitors inside the world of espionage.
Go undercover as an “Agent of Discovery” to find out the secret identity of the spy villain and solve puzzles and challenges to find him. Learn how disguises help spies to catch the bad guy and even rescue people. Crawl through the villain’s lair while looking for clues hidden in everyday objects.
Guests can create their own secret decoders and use them to solve encrypted messages. Play with spy gadgets like periscopes, voice changers and lasers. Solve our jewel heist labyrinth and more.
General admission to the Discovery Center is $8 per person or $28 for a family of four. Annual memberships are also available for individuals and families.
By reservation only, StarLab Planetarium shows are held on Saturdays and tickets are $30 per ten-person group. Guests are encouraged to call ahead to book a reservation time for the planetarium. An alternative Planetarium-like show, NASA Solar System Exploration, is also available for a $3 add-on to the price of general admission.

The Dunnellon Country Quilters meet at 12:30 p.m. every Monday at the First United Methodist Church on West State Road 40 in Dunnellon.
The group makes patriotic quilts for veterans, pillowcases for Shands Children’s Cancer Center, prayer quilts for the First United Methodist Church and quilts for the Citrus County Resource Center. We also have classes for different projects and go on road trips and quilt shows. Every third Monday of the month, we hold our business meeting and share what we have made.

The Dunnellon Community Thrift Shop, an all-volunteer enterprise, has been operating on a four-day-a-week schedule since reopening after the initial Covid pandemic shutdown. The reduced schedule has been due to volunteers who moved away during the pandemic or had surgeries or illnesses.
We would very much like to get back to our usual six-day-a-week schedule, but lack enough volunteers to do so. We have been in business for 48 years, and as a non-profit 501c(3) organization, our goal remains focused on giving our profits back to the community. Recent donations include Food4Kids, Dunnellon Little League, local food pantries and the Boys and Girls Club, and we’ll be sponsoring a week at the Sheriffs Youth Ranch camp for eight children this summer.
We are looking for a few community-minded volunteers who would like to make a difference in our community. Do you have a little time to spare? Join us for a 4-hour shift once a week, working with congenial volunteers.

Setting prescribed fires in controlled settings can reduce the risk of wildfires burning out of control, as many Floridians witnessed during the state’s wildfire emergency in 2017.
That’s why the Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) will be conducting prescribed burns July through September on the Hálpata Tastanaki Preserve in Marion County.
Hálpata Tastanaki Preserve is located 2 miles east of Dunnellon and is bounded by County Road 484 on the north, State Road 200 on the southeast and the Withlacoochee River on the southwest.
Approximately 200 acres will be burned in small, manageable units.
Some major benefits of prescribed fire include:
Reducing overgrown plants, which decreases the risk of catastrophic wildfires.
Promoting the growth of new, diverse plants.
Maintaining the character and condition of wildlife habitat.
Maintaining access for public recreation.
The District conducts prescribed fires on approximately 30,000 acres each year.

The First Methodist Church of Dunnellon is starting a free program called “Forget-Me-Not.” We offer three hours of respite care for caregivers of early dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. We also offer a chance for seniors to get out of the house and socialize with other seniors. This program is free.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Citizens Academy and Partnership (CAP) program, a free 7-week educational course about the operations of the Sheriff’s Office, is currently accepting applications for classes beginning in September 2022.
Classes will be held at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Multi-Purpose Room, 3300 NW 10th St., Ocala, every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. beginning Tuesday, Sept. 20.
During the program, MCSO staff will highlight all units within the Sheriff’s Office, giving citizens an in-depth understanding of what the agency is doing for the community. Each week will focus on a different aspect of the agency, personnel, equipment, policies, procedures and overall function. Students will have an opportunity to view specialty unit equipment, hear from experts in the fields of law enforcement, investigations, detention and administration.

On the fourth Saturday of each month, food and basic home needs will be available at North Oak Church in Citrus Springs at 10 a.m., until supplies run out.
Enter the church property from North Citrus Springs Boulevard and a supply of paper products, detergents, personal items and more will be brought to your car. Drive around, following the driveway, and food items will also be brought to the vehicle. Then exit on to North Elkcam Boulevard.
Items vary based on availability. Anyone who has a need is welcome and there is no charge.

The exhibit, A Floral Retrospective by Gregory Dirr,will be on display through Friday, December 9, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Clerk’s Office in the Ocala City Hall, 110 SE Watula Ave. It is free and open to the public.
Gregory Dirr lives and works in Boca Raton. He is an interdisciplinary visual artist, creating work as a cathartic response to his surroundings with a focus on environmental conservation. Since graduating from Ringling College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Dirr has exhibited internationally and curated group and solo exhibitions. He is currently focusing on individual bodies of work and taking on large-scale commissions from cities and private organizations.
